Cherry has a light to reddish brown, lustrous heartwood and a nearly white to light brown or pale pink sapwood. The color will darken when exposed to light and also can very greatly between boards. Cherry is 26% softer and 17% more dimensionally stable than Northern red oak. Cherry makes a beautiful floor and takes a stain well, although caution must be taken not to over-darken the wood, which often darkens with age. Cherry has traditionally been used for caskets, furniture, and veneer panels.
