Northern Hard Maple has a light reddish brown to dark brown heartwood and a white to pale reddish brown sapwood. Northern Hard Maple has a close, straight grain with a fine, uniform texture. Maple is 12% harder than Northern red oak and 15% less dimensionally stable than Northern red oak. It makes a beautiful, durable floor although it is difficult to stain. Maple has traditionally been used for building cabinets, cutting boards, and bowling alleys.
