Hickory has a closed grain and somewhat rough texture. Hickory is 41% harder and 3% less dimensionally stable than Northern red oak. Hickory is an exceptionally tough, heavy, hard, and strong wood. Hickory makes a beautiful floor and is difficult to stain. Hickory has traditionally been used for flooring, meat smoking, ladder rungs, and athletic goods.
