Northern Red Oak has a similar color for the heartwood and sapwood. The sapwood has a slightly lighter, reddish tone. Northern red oak has open, plumed or flared grain pattern similar to that of Northern white ash. Northern red oak is the benchmark for hardness and makes a beautiful, durable floor. Northern red oak also stains very well with good contrast.
