MAKE A BUDGET

Complicated renovations will take more time and money than a cosmetic facelift, but even the smallest jobs should have a price and timeframe attached to avoid suprises.

GATHER THE TROOPS

Major overhauls take time and money, sure, but small changes require a budget and timeframe as well. Set both up ahead of time to avoid suprises, and stick to the game plan.

3 TO 6 WEEKS BEFORE:

CHOICES, CHOICES

Time to make those tricky decisions about style, palette, appliances, fixtures and materials. By choosing now, you'll have ample time to pick alternates if something is out of stock.

MAKE THE CALL

The final countdown. Settle on your floor plan, down to the smallest details like added storage and lighting. Once you lock up the details, circle your start date on the calendar.

DAYS BEFORE AND DURING:

STASH YOUR GOODIES

If it's in the way, move it. Box, label and store your kitchen items in a temporary cooking/clean-up area. If you have the option, make arrangements to live elsewhere until construction is complete.

STICK TO THE PLAN

Get ready to make decisions - both big and small - along the way. If you've done your homework and are confident in your choices, you'll be able to handle any crisis that pops up.
